A Storied Past - 1810 to Today

Initially known as The Tappan Building, today’s Blackburn Building is located in Gloucester, Massachusetts, and is a historic building with a rich history dating back to the late 19th century. The building, originally constructed in 1810, has served various purposes throughout its history and continues to be a prominent feature of the city’s downtown area.

Captain John Tappan, a successful local businessman, and shipbuilder, built the Tappan Building. The building was designed in the Richardsonian Romanesque style and was originally used as a commercial and retail space. Various businesses, including a pharmacy, a dry goods store, and a grocery store, occupied the first-floor storefronts. The upper floors of the building were used as office space and apartments.
